Former New York Red Bulls forward John Wolyniec has announced his retirement.

Wolyniec played 12 Major League Soccer seasons, including seven with the league's New York franchise. He was waived by the Red Bulls in late July when the team needed a roster space for Thierry Henry.

Wolyniec is second in regular-season games with New York, having played 142 with 26 goals.

Wolyniec has accepted a position in the Red Bull Academy. The team plans to honor him at their home match against the Kansas City Wizards on Oct. 2.
