SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) Overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin led Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein by the slimmest of margins following the opening run of a giant slalom on the Turin 2006 Olympic course on Saturday.

The American was 0.01 seconds ahead of Weirather, with defending overall winner Lara Gut and former world champion Tessa Worley tied for third, 0.05 back.

Shiffrin, who won the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, is seeking her second World Cup giant slalom victory - to go with her 21 slalom wins.

Sofia Goggia, the Italian who has three podium results in three different disciplines this season, stood fifth. Despite a major mistake, she was only 0.12 behind.
