Tesla’s 2016 has not got off to a great start, after one of its cars caught fire at a charging station in Norway on New Year’s Day.
The owner of a 2014 Tesla Model S had left his car on charge at a quick charging station when, for a reason yet to be determined, it began to burn.
According to Fædrelandsvennen, due to the car’s highly flammable lithium battery, the firefighters were not able to fight the blaze with water, and so could do nothing more than cool the fire with a special kind of foam until it had burned to a crisp. There is a form of water with copper material that could be used to put the fire out, but it is reportedly too costly for the Norwegian fire department. Subsequently, police roped off the area during the incident and nobody was reportedly injured.
Tesla has stated that it is not dangerous to use one of its quick charging stations, and there is an investigation ongoing into the cause of the incident.
