MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Robert Hight topped Funny Car qualifying in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Worldwide Technology Raceway.

A year after breaking his collarbone during a crash in the final round, Hight had a 3.877-second run at 334.90 mph in a Chevrolet Camaro. He's seeking his ninth No. 1 qualifier of the season and 69th overall.

"We had high hopes," Hight said. "We made four really good runs in testing, and (crew chief) Jimmy Prock was not going to let this thing slow down. That's not how you're going to win a championship. It was pretty exciting and to do it at my sponsor's race, that's a good way to shine."

Billy Torrence led in Top Fuel, Erica Enders in Pro Stock, and Steve Johnson in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the second of six races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Torrence had a 3.699 at 321.8, Enders ran a 6.570 at 209.62 in a Camaro, and Johnson had a 6.838 at 196.02 on a Suzuki.
