Power bounces back from crash to top first day of IndyCar practice
The 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series officially kicked off on Friday with the first day of practice.
Defending IndyCar champion Scott Dixon looked like he would be the fastest of the day, but he was pipped by Will Power in the closing minutes of the afternoon session. Will Power finished second here last year and won the event the year before while, despite all of Dixon’s racing success, he has yet to take a win on the streets of St. Petersburg.
Simon Pagenaud was fastest during the morning session and backed it up with the third-fastest time in the afternoon session, over six tenths of a second faster than his morning time.
The day wasn’t without its incidents, as Will Power got into the wall in the morning session, then the afternoon session was red flagged twice, firstly due to damage to the track surface, and then a second time when Alexander Rossi overshot a corner and required a tow to return to the pits.
