If you’ve got half a million dollars - or close to it, anyway - burning a hole in your pocket, Ford Motor Co. wants to talk to you.

Ford is officially accepting applications to purchase the insane 2017 Ford GT. Expected to produce about 600 horsepower, the new car is the most remarkable vehicle ever to carry the Ford name.

If you go to https://www.ford.com/performance/gt/, you can configure your own 2017 Ford GT, which the automaker says “is expected to have a starting price in the mid-$400,000s, excluding destination and delivery.”

The configurator is a huge time suck, and we mean that in the best way possible. Would-be buyers can choose from eight exterior colors, seven stripe packages, four interiors, two wheel packages and lots more. Be prepared to spend a lot of time there.

Ford will build just 250 GTs in each of the next two years and demand is expected to far exceed production.

“The purchase process for the Ford GT is as unique as our all-new supercar,” said Henry Ford III, global marketing manager, Ford Performance. “We understand GT customers are strong ambassadors for Ford Motor Company, and we look forward to providing them a service as distinct as the car itself.”

Here’s where it gets interesting: “Applicants will have an opportunity to identify their preferred Ford dealership in GT-approved markets and, if approved, will complete their purchase with the help of their dealer and the new Ford GT Concierge Service.

“Accepted applicants from around the world will be contacted by the concierge and provided a tailored experience - not only through the ordering and delivery but through years of ownership.”

But if you want to buy a Ford GT, be prepared for some serious questioning on the application - Ford only wants the GTs in the hands of people who will actually drive them.

Ford goes as far as asking applicants to provide a 60-second video explaining why they’d be a good candidate to own a GT. On the application, you’re also asked to list the cars in your collection and to “briefly describe your role as a public influencer.”

In other words, this is going to be a lot more sophisticated buying experience than heading down to your local Ford dealer and buying a Mustang GT, and that’s a good thing.

And be prepared to act quickly. All applications must be submitted by approximately 3:59 AM GMT on May 12th, 2016.
