NHRA racer Larry Dixon opens up after winning fight with throat cancer
Larry Dixon is a three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion and, in 2015, made the headlines after walking away from an airborne crash at the Gatornationals.
However, in an interview with RTV6 | The Indy Channel, 49-year-old Dixon opens up about about his biggest victory to date after surviving a battle with throat cancer.
Dixon reports that he first realized there might be something wrong when he had a sore throat in Sept. 2014 that “just didn’t go away.” Dixon finally saw a doctor four months later, where they found that he had Stage III throat cancer. After more than 30 radiation treatments, Dixon found himself cancer-free just three months later.
All of this had been going on during the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, in which Dixon broke two vertebrae in his crash at Gainesville, yet still persevered through it all to finish fourth in points. Only Dixon’s team owner and family had known about his battle with cancer.
