In 2008, six helmets were stolen from an INDYCAR fan experience trailer parked in Speedway, Indiana.

Recently, all six were surprisingly returned to INDYCAR, reports IndyCar.com. No details about the return were released.

The helmets included ones belonging to Danica Patrick and the late Dan Wheldon, as well as the helmet Ryan Hunter-Reay wore for his 2007 IndyCar debut. Hunter-Reay was on hand to take back his helmet, as were Helio Castroneves, Ed Carpenter and Sarah Fisher.

Fisher’s was covered with fan signatures that she had collected for her comeback race at Kentucky in 2006, and she wasn’t afraid to admit that its return was an emotional experience:

Meanwhile, Castroneves handed his helmet to former crew chief Vince Kremer, who is now the vice president of operations at INDYCAR. In 1998, Castroneves had promised Kremer that he would give him one of his helmets, with Kremer reminding him ever since, reports IndyCar.com. Now, he’s finally made good on that promise.
