Dungey races to first-ever Daytona Supercross win; KTM sweeps again
Ryan Dungey raced to his second straight Monster Energy Supercross victory and fourth of the season Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway.
The Red Bull KTM ace took part in a spirited battle with veteran Andrew Short early in the race before claiming the lead on Lap 8 and rocketing off to score his first-career win at Daytona.
"It feels good to get my first-ever Daytona win," said Dungey. "The bigger picture is obviously focusing on the championship, but to get the win feels even better. We had to do a lot changes to the bike prior to this race since it is different than normal Supercross racing and all of the changes were for the good. My bike worked great and I am happy to take this win."
Eli Tomac struggled on the start, but managed to regroup and finish second. He was joined on the podium by rookie Blake Baggett, who scored his first-ever podium finish.
Honda's Trey Canard was unable to battle for a spot inside the top five due to a crash on Lap 1. He tangled with Broc Tickle and was buried in 21st, forcing him to fight through the field for the remainder of the race. Surprisingly Canard bounced back to finish sixth.
Dungey now leads Canard by 40 points with seven races left in the 450SX season. Tomac takes over the third spot in the championship fight while Ken Roczen falls to fourth after not racing in Daytona (left ankle injury).
KTM's Marvin Musquin won the 250SX race for his second straight victory and third in the first four races of the Eastern Regional season. It was also the third time Red Bull KTM has swept both classes this season.
Musquin, from France, has a 12-point lead over Yamaha's Jeremy Martin.
Honda's Justin Bogle was second, and Martin finished third.
