Dakar Rally 2015: Al-Attiyah retains lead after stage 3

Nasser Al-Attiyah continues to lead the 2015 Dakar Rally after Tuesday’s stage 3, while Orlando Terranova put on the fastest time of the day in an attempt to make up for his crash during Monday’s stage 2.
Terranova jumped back up from 10th to third position, while Al-Attiyah’s overall lead remains a solid 5 minute 18 second lead over Giniel de Villiers heading into Wednesday’s stage 4.
Former NASCAR racer Robby Gordon remains mired in 40th position after overheating brakes cost him during the second stage.
Attrition is beginning to take its toll, with over 30 cars being unable to make the start on Tuesday following Monday’s longest stage.
Meanwhile, Dakar debutant Matthias Walkner won Tuesday’s event in the motorcycle class, but remains 10 minutes behind Joan Barreda in the overall standings in third position. Paulo Goncalves enters Wednesday in second, 5 minutes 33 seconds back of Barreda.
Tuesday also saw the first fatality in the 2015 Dakar Rally, with Polish motorcycle racer Michal Hernik being found dead due to currently unknown causes.
