The Yamaha rider also set a track record at the 2.7-mile, 12-turn Portimao Circuit with a time of 1 minute, 42.412 seconds in qualifying Saturday for the final round of the World Superbike Championship.
The pole gives the 25-year-old World Superbike rookie the upper hand over championship rival Noriyuki Haga of Japan. Ducati rider Haga leads Spies by 10 points in the standings, but had poor qualifying runs and will start 10th in Sunday's two races.
Spies improved his time in each of the three qualifying sessions.
The Dallas resident is seventh on the career World Superbike poles list. The old mark for poles in a season was set by American Doug Polen in 1991.
