Aleshin uninjured after Montoya's car lands on top of him (video)
The IndyCar Series doubleheader weekend in Toronto has been filled with drama and it continued on Sunday at the start of Race 2. When a rain shower hit the circuit 12 laps into the feature, a massive pileup occurred at Turn 8.
The slick track caused Juan Pablo Montoya to slam into the tire barrier as the field barreled into the turn behind him. Several drivers managed to miss the Colombian, but that wasn't the case for hometown hero James Hinchcliffe and rookie Mikhail Aleshin.
Hinchcliffe spun and clipped Montoya's right rear before hitting the outside wall just before Aleshin locked up and plowed into the rear of Montoya's car. As a result, Aleshin's No. 7 Honda was wedged underneath Montoya's No. 2 Chevrolet.
The terrifying incident left onlookers worried Aleshin's well-being, but thankfully the young Russian escaped uninjured. However, it was a close call as he later showed that his helmet was hit by Montoya's right-rear wheel.
"As you can see, there are some marks here in the helmet," Aleshin told NBCSN. "It was not nice at all because I was sitting under the car and it was so hot, it was getting so much closer to this car; I could not breathe at all. I was just sitting under the car. Impossible to breathe, and not nice feeling at all."
