Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo has announced his retirement after 17 professional seasons, his last with the Seattle Sounders FC of the MLS.
The Sounders announced Monday that Nkufo decided to step away after the team and the forward cut ties at the start of this season.
Nkufo, 35, joined Seattle following the 2010 World Cup, where he played for Switzerland. In 11 MLS matches, Nkufo scored five goals. Before joining the Sounders, Nkufo played seven seasons for FC Twente in the Netherlands, where he scored a club-record 114 goals in league play.
Nkufo, whose family lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, says he plans to stay in North America and find opportunities to help at the youth level.
