Sapong lifts Sporting to 1-0 win over Earthquakes

C.J. Sapong scored the first Major League Soccer goal at Livestrong Sporting Park to give Sporting Kansas City a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes and their first victory in their new home.
Kansas City (3-6-4) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season and is unbeaten in its last five matches. San Jose (5-5-4) had a six-match unbeaten string broken.
Sapong scored in the 31st minute when he leaped at the edge of the box and with his left foot deflected a long free kick past San Jose goalie Jon Busch. Graham Zusi sent the kick into the penalty area after Ramiro Corrales fouled Sporting's Davy Arnaud about 45 yards from the goal.
Sporting keeper Jimmy Nielsen earned his first shutout of the season.
Sporting played a scoreless draw with Chicago when the $200 million stadium opened eight days ago.
