This is a true story, as hard as it may be for you to believe.
When I first started watching top-level football in Scotland, in the 1970s, there were great players everywhere. You would recognize their names — Hamish McAlpine, David Narey, Paul Sturrock, Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law were among them.
The very best of the lot played in the old English First Division but there were plenty left over to stock outstanding teams in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
