Gianluca Zavarise scored the lone goal for Toronto FC in a 3-1 loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, the club's first defeat of the MLS exhibition season.

Zavarise, a Canadian midfielder, scored just out of halftime when Jacob Peterson raced down the wing and sent a low cross into the box. Zavarise held the ball up, turned and fired to score.

Toronto pressured Zagreb for the tying goal before allowing a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

Toronto FC was missing captain Dwayne De Rosario and Adrian Cann. They played in Canada's 1-0 loss to Greece the previous day and arrived back in camp just an hour before kickoff.
