European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal plans to cut the number of vice captains to two for his team's title defense at the United States in September.
That move would be in stark contrast to previous captain Colin Montgomerie, who won at Celtic Manor in Wales in 2010 with six assistants, including vice captains in Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn and current British Open champion Darren Clarke.
Monty also brought on board Olazabal and the struggling Sergio Garcia, while Rhys Davies of Wales had an ''ambassador'' role.
''I know Davis Love will have four assistants but I am having just two,'' Olazabal said of the U.S. captain. ''It's a lot of headaches if you have more than two. Just too many headaches, so there will be only two vice captains I will be selecting.
''I have spoken with Davis and he said to me he will be picking his assistants about 60 days from now, about the beginning of July. But I'm not in any rush, so we'll just wait and see.''
Paul McGinley looks certain to be one for the event at Medinah Country Club near Chicago from Sept. 28-30 after Olazabal expressed happiness at his handling of the past two Seve Trophy-winning sides.
Olazabal has also challenged three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, who hasn't won on either side of the Atlantic in more than three years, to find form ahead of the cut-off point for selection.
Harrington had to rely on Montgomerie selecting him as a ''wild card'' for Celtic Manor.
''The ideal situation for me would be to have all the top players in the top 12, like Lee (Westwood), Luke (Donald), Rory (McIlroy), G Mac (Graeme McDowell), Martin Kaymer and Ian Poulter,'' Olazabal said. ''So for players like Harrington the ball is still in his court. They have to show form.''
Joining Harrington outside the top 30 are former Ryder Cup players Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Edoardo Molinari, Soren Hansen, Oliver Wilson and Clarke.
