US Open champion Rory McIlroy enjoyed a toast to his own historic success at Congressional before tweeting his pride Monday at finally lifting his first major title.

McIlroy, golf's new superstar after a record 16-under score clinched the Open on Sunday, posted a photo of himself sipping from the trophy in front of a few fellow late night drinkers.

"Tastes good!!!" he tweeted along with the image, while his girlfriend Holly Sweeney confirmed "champagne [was] flowing" well into the night in Maryland in celebration at "the curly one."

The party appeared to continue into the early morning, with the Northern Irishman returning to Twitter a few hours later to respond to the onslaught of goodwill from his almost 400,000 followers.

"Thanks to everyone for all the messages over the past few hours," he tweeted. "It was a very special week for me. Proud to be a major champion!"

McIlroy earlier dipped into Charlie Sheen's Twitter vernacular to celebrate his victory, while jokingly recognizing that the success ended any lingering disappointment at his final round downfall at the Masters in April.

"#winning #bounceback," he typed, along with a link to a shot of the trophy at the postround news conference.
