Jordan Spieth says one putt may have cost him six strokes Thursday
On a beautiful day in Scotland when Royal Troon was likely the easiest it will play all week long, Jordan Spieth missed out on the chance to go low and carded an even-par round of 71, which put him in a tie for 52nd, eight shots behind leader Phil Mickelson.
Spieth hit 78% percent of greens in regulation, but uncharacterisically needed 33 putts Thursday (he leads the PGA Tour with an average of 27.3 putts per round) and squandered many of his birdie looks. After his round, Spieth said that had he made a birdie putt on his first hole of the day, he believes the round would have been completely different.

On the tougher inward nine, Spieth bogeyed the 11th (like many, many others), birdied the par-4 17th but finished his round with a bogey at No. 18. Still, Spieth was pleased with how he played tee-to-green.
