Jaguars mascot salvages a losing day

A week after coming oh-so-close to besting Bud Cauley, Jacksonville Jaguars mascot Jaxson DeVille took down 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk in a closest-to-the-pin contest during halftime at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. on Sunday.

DeVille’s victory was the lone bright spot in Jacksonville on Sunday as the Jags fell to the Buffalo Bills 27-20. With the victory, the Jaguars mascot officially has more wins at EverBank Stadium than the Jaguars do this season. Ouch. (Jaxson won in November, too, defeating Mark McCumber, a 10-time winner on the PGA Tour.)

As a result of Jaxson’s victory, the Jaguars Foundation donated $1,000 to a charity of Furyk’s choice and every fan in attendance received a complementary order of Papa John’s cheesesticks. Had Furyk won, the Jags Foundation would have donated $10,000 to a charity of his choice. If either player had made a hole-in-one, a lucky fan would’ve won $1 million.

While waiting to hit their shots, Jaxson and Furyk became the latest to take part in the craze that started this summer and is still sweeping the nation, “Dufnering.”

The final closest-to-the-pin contest will take place next week when the Jaguars take on the Tennessee Titans in their final home game of the season.
