FedEx Cup Scenarios for Spieth, Rory, Phil, Bubba

While these stars sit outside of the top five in points, any one of them could still win the FedEx Cup. Here’s how.
Even though Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are not in the top five in points, they still have outside chances to win the FedEx Cup if they win the Tour Championship. But they will need a lot of help from others.
How Jordan Spieth can win:
He must win the Tour Championship. Dustin Johnson has to finish in a three-way T2 or worse, and Patrick Reed must finish T2 or worse.
How Rory McIlroy can win:
McIlroy must win the Tour Championship and Dustin Johnson has to finish T2 or worse. McIlroy also has a mathematical chance to win it all if he finishes second in the tournament.

How Phil Mickelson can win:
Lefty has a steeper mountain to climb and will need more luck if he wants to win the FedEx Cup. He must win the Tour Championship, have Dustin Johnson finish T7 or worse, have Patrick Reed finish T4 of worse, have Adam Scott finish T3 or worse, have Jason Day finish in a three-way T2 or worse and have Paul Casey finish T2 or worse. Stranger things have happened, though, so in theory, Mickelson has a fighting chance.
How Bubba Watson can win:
Bubba needs even more help than Lefty. He must win the Tour Championship, have Dustin Johnson finish 17th or worse, have Patrick Reed finish in a three-way T5 or worse, have Adam Scott finish in a three-way T3 or worse, have Paul Casey finish in a three-way T2 or worse and have McIlroy finish T2 or worse.
Bill Haas defied all odds in 2011 when he came from 25th place in the standings to win the Tour Championship in a playoff over Hunter Mahan. During the playoff, he hit his second shot on the 17th hole into the water adjacent to the green. However, he made a miraculous blast out of the drink, parred the hole and went on to win the tournament and the FedExCup.
This year, Bubba Watson 24th in points entering the tournament, one spot ahead of Haas’ placement five years ago. Could a miracle happen twice? He and the rest will need to pass the top five in order to do it, two of which are in strong contention for Player of the Year. Dustin Johnson is in first place, followed by Patrick Reed, Adam Scott, Jason Day and Paul Casey. Any one of them can win the FedExCup with a victory at the Tour Championship.
