Cheyenne Woods advances to quarters

Qualifying medalist Cheyenne Woods, the niece of Tiger Woods, advanced to the quarterfinals in the Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links, winning two matches Thursday at Bandon Dunes' Bandon Trails course.

Woods, the 20-year-old Phoenix player who won the Atlantic Coast Conference individual championship last month as a junior at Wake Forest, beat 14-year-old Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar, Calif., 2-up in the second round, and routed 19-year-old Alex Stewart of Peoria, Ariz., 8 and 7 in the third.

Woods will face Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y., in the quarterfinals Friday. Park advanced with a 1-up victory over Julie Yang of Mesa, Ariz. In the other upper-bracket quarterfinal, Vietnam's Brianna Do will play Stephanie Kono of Honolulu. Do beat defending champion Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., 1-up, and Kono topped Catherine Dolan of Ballwin, Mo., 2 and 1.

In the lower bracket, Scotland's Sally Watson will face Marissa Dodd of Allen, Texas, and Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., will play Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass.

Watson routed Angel Yin of Arcadia, Calif., 6 and 5; Dodd beat Prima Thammaraks of Ames, Iowa, 2-up; Lua edged Lauren Cate of St. Augustine, Fla., 1-up; and Altomare beat Kelsey Vines of San Antonio 2-up.

The tournament is limited to players who don't hold privileges at any course that doesn't extend playing privileges to the general public.
