14-year-old phenom barely makes cut
After a controversial penalty and a ton of Internet angst from the golf-loving public, Tianlang Guan will make the cut at the Masters after all.
The young phenom, whose very existence at this tournament is enough to impress most people, spent the better part of Friday sweating the cut at Augusta after a second-round 75 left him 4-over for the tournament.
But he would only be 3-over if not for a highly scrutinized slow play penalty assessed on the 17th hole during Friday's round. The infraction cost him a precious stroke that nearly sent him packing before the weekend and ignited a great deal of Internet controversy:

Tiger moves up the leaderboard
A fine start for Tiger Woods dipped a bit with a pair of back-nine bogies, but he still moved himself a little higher up the board with a 1-under 71. He went from 2-under to 5-under in a span of four holes before giving two back on the back nine.
The first of those blemishes perhaps shouldn't even have been. An excellent approach on the 15th bounced off the flagstick and into a water hazard, turning a potential birdie chance into a bogey:

Day wins the day
The big winner Friday was Australia's Jason Day, who besides giving Guan and Watson fits, also had himself a fine round to move into sole possession of the lead.
Day shot a 4-under 68 to end up at 6-under after the first two days. He'll be in the final pairing Saturday.

Sergio fades back
The day was not nearly as kind to Sergio Garcia, who entered the day with a share of the lead at 6-under but shot a 4-over 76 to end up four strokes back headed into Saturday.
Marc Leishman, who was tied with Garcia when the day started, shot a 1-over 73 and is one shot back of Day.

What about Phil?
After a 1-under round yesterday, Phil Mickelson fell off the leaderboard Friday with a 4-over 76. He did just enough to stay alive for the weekend.
He played the front nine at even par in the second round before a disastrous back stretch left him out of the mix.

Kevin Na going against doctor's orders
Even though he has a bulging disk in his back, Kevin Na was among the leaders at the Masters after his first round. He was on the course for round two, despite his doctor's wishes that he be home rehabbing. He shot 4-over Friday to go to 2-over for the tournament and will stick around for the weekend.
