Here's a first:
A tournament round was canceled because of bees.
Texas-Arlington men's golf coach Jay Rees called off the final round of the UTA/Waterchase Invitational on Tuesday after an estimated 60,000 bees infested the 18th hole at Waterchase Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
A beekeeper was called to the course and recommended that the final round be canceled. Players had completed about six holes when the delay began a little more than two hours after the start of the round.
"My assistant and I were made aware that a beehive had opened up and had fallen from a branch overlooking the 18th green," Rees wrote in an email. "I got stung underneath my right eye. There were a couple of people that got stung, so it became a liability situation . . . With teams needing to catch flights, I canceled today's round for safety issues."
Wichita State won its second consecutive tournament to start the season after shooting a 6-under 570 (294-276). The Shockers' Rafael Becker won the individual title with a 5-under 139 total (75-64).
