Seve Ballesteros will help Spain's bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The cancer-stricken Ballesteros was given a standing ovation when he was introduced at a ceremony Tuesday to formally launch the bid.

Ballesteros captained the winning European team in 1997 and said that ``to be the patron now of Madrid's candidacy means a lot.''

Ballesteros underwent chemotherapy after four surgeries in late 2008 to remove a malignant tumor from his brain.
