Austria's Brier qualifies for British Open

Austria's Markus Brier joined 11 British players in booking their places in next month's British Open through final qualifying on Wednesday.
Brier, a two-time winner on the European Tour, came through a five-man playoff on the Littlestone course to qualify for the third major of the year, at Royal St. George's from July 14-17.
''I had to go back to tour qualifying school last year so I've had a bit of a bad run in recent times,'' said the 42-year-old Brier, who has slipped to No. 312 in the rankings.
''But now I can look forward to playing at Royal St. George's, where I have played a previous Open.''
Englishman Lee Corfield also qualified via the playoff to join Littlestone winner Andy Smith, whose 4-under total of 138 was achieved in adversity.
An operation on a twisted bowel last year has restricted his playing time in 2011, while he went into qualifying with a set of borrowed clubs because his own irons did not comply with new regulations.
''I have been doing all kinds of part-time jobs to keep myself going - laboring, landscape gardening for one of my friends, and a bit of work as a carpenter's mate,'' Smith said.
''I'm even using borrowed clubs this week, with one wedge that I found in my garage at home and another wedge that was in the lost property room at Tudor Park (his local club). I only used them for the first time in practice last week but it's just like everything has been meant to be. It's incredible.''
London-born Mark Laskey overcame Dutchman Inder Van Weerelt in a playoff at Rye, while English pair Andrew Johnston and Simon Lilly progressed after a four-man playoff at Royal Cinque Ports.
New Zealander Michael Campbell, who won the U.S. Open in 2005, and former Ryder Cup player Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden missed out on Tuesday.
