College football: UR QB Corp out at least a few weeks
Without its top two quarterbacks, the University of Richmond yesterday began preparing for Saturday's CAA Football game at Massachusetts.
Starter Aaron Corp suffered a knee injury early in a 17-0 loss at New Hampshire on Saturday, and more information regarding that injury is expected today from Spiders coach Latrell Scott. Corp, a junior transfer from USC, will miss a minimum of a few weeks and could be out longer depending on the results of medical evaluation conducted yesterday.
The left wrist of John Laub, Corp's backup, is in a cast because of an injury suffered last month, and he is projected to be out at least two more weeks. Sophomore Nick Hicks, Richmond's Spiders continued from C1
punter and third-team QB, replaced Corp at New Hampshire and threw five interceptions. UR committed seven turnovers (six interceptions and a fumble).
True freshman Montel White, a 6-5 lefty from Surry County High, is the only other QB on the Spiders' roster. He hasn't played this season, and Richmond began the year intending to redshirt White. The Spiders' staff will determine this week if that plan requires modification.
On homecoming at UMass (2-0 in the CAA, 4-1), the Spiders (0-2, 2-3) will face one of the league's biggest surprises so far this season. The Minutemen were picked to finish eighth among 10 teams, two spots behind UR, in the CAA's preseason poll. But UMass, off last weekend, beat William and Mary (3-1, 5-1) and lost at Michigan 42-37. Massachusetts was ranked No. 8 in last week's FCS poll.
According to Scott, there is no major challenge that accompanies back-to-back trips to New England.
"We could be going to New England two weeks in a row, or we could be going North Carolina [this] week. We treat the road trips the same," he said.
UR won't play in New England next season. UNH, Maine and UMass will visit Robins Stadium. UR is not scheduled to play Rhode Island in 2011. The Rams are expected to announce that they will leave CAA Football for the Northeast Conference, but they will play as a CAA member next season.
