Wisconsin Football: What's at Stake In Badgers Contest at Iowa

No Matter the Record, Badgers-Hawkeyes Will Always Be Intense
Wisconsin Football travels to Kinnick Stadium this weekend to face off with the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 90th time in the two schools history. The overall series is split right down the middle as the Badgers have won 44 times, while the Hawkeyes have won 43. There have been two ties in the series. A true definition of a rivalry game. The Badgers and Hawkeyes will battle for the Heartland Trophy, but much much more is at stake for both teams going forward, and Saturday’s outcome could alter the course of both.
Iowa took the most recent match up last season, which was in my opinion, the worst played college football game in the last decade as neither team looked like it had played football before. But that was last year, and as you turn to this season, you expect to have a similar close game that you have over recent years.
More from Badger of Honor
Iowa comes into the game at 5-2, and looking at the match up with the Badgers as a season defining game. With a victory, it puts away back in a position to be a contender in the Big Ten West. With a loss, it drops the Hawkeyes to two Big Ten Losses with Michigan and Nebraska still looming on the schedule, meaning an uphill climb later in the season.
For the Badgers, its an opportunity to get back on track and get the ball rolling like they had it in the beginning of the season. Its safe to say that despite playing well in back to back losses that Wisconsin Football has lost some of the momentum they had going right away this season. However, a win on the road against a rival will quickly turn that right back around. This matchup is virtually the first playoff game of the Big Ten West. The winner stays in contention, while the loser falls far behind the 8 ball.
While many things are at stake for this game, they really only add to the magnitude of an Iowa-Wisconsin match up. These two schools play for pride, and there is certainly no love lost between them and their fans. The records and trophies truly don’t matter when the two meet, as the intensity will always be at its highest level come the start on Saturday afternoon.
