Virginia assistant Tom O'Brien ends 40-year coaching career

Virginia associate head coach for offense Tom O'Brien is retiring after a 40-year career.

The school announced the move on Tuesday.

O'Brien spent the past two seasons on Mike London's staff with the Cavaliers, working with the offense and tight ends. He spent 16 seasons before that as a head coach, guiding Boston College from 1997-2006 and NC State from 2007-2012. He also spent 15 years as a Virginia assistant.

O'Brien was considering retirement when Virginia brought him back two years ago.

The Naval Academy graduate has combined 115-80 record as a head coach.

His 75-45 record at Boston College was the most wins by a coach in the Eagles' history and included four nine-win seasons.

O'Brien started his coaching career with George Welsh at Navy.
