CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina defensive assistant Dan Disch won't return to the Tar Heels next season.

Team spokesman Kevin Best said Thursday in a text message that Disch was no longer on UNC's staff, making him the third defensive coach to leave after UNC gave up the most points and yards in its history last season. Associate head coach for defense Vic Koenning and linebackers coach Ron West are also gone, leaving only line coach Keith Gilmore from last season's defensive staff.

Disch was listed as the defensive coordinator under Koenning last year, and also coached cornerbacks.

UNC has hired former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik as its new defensive coordinator. Former Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis has also joined the staff, though his position assignment has yet to be determined.
