LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA has hired Bill Roth from Virginia Tech as the Bruins' play-by-play announcer for football and men's basketball radio broadcasts.

Roth replaces Chris Roberts, who retired in March after more than 20 years behind the mic. Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced Roth's hiring Wednesday.

Roth has spent 27 years as the lead play-by-play announcer for Virginia Tech football and men's basketball. He's an 11-time Virginia Sportscaster of the Year winner and is in the state's Sports Hall of Fame.

Roth says he visited former UCLA coach John Wooden in Los Angeles several years ago, describing the experience as ''second to none.''

He will continue to work for IMG College, the multimedia rights partner for Virginia Tech and UCLA. Roth is from Pittsburgh and graduated from Syracuse University in 1987.
