Twelve-member committee to select next Texas A&M mascot

First, Texas A&M had to find a quarterback to replace Johnny Manziel. Now the Aggies will be looking for a canine to replace Reveille VIII, the school's mascot.
How many people does it take to choose a new mascot? In College Station, the answer is one dozen.
That's right, 12 people will be involved in the choice of who will step in for Reveille VIII, who has been A&M's mascot since August 2008.
Reveille VIII will continue in her role until the end of the spring semester. She's considered the First Lady of Aggieland.
It isn't an easy decision for when a mascot steps down. This one was made after consultation with veterinarians at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Reveille VIII, will turn 9 in the spring and has been part of hundreds of athletic events, student programs and other activities since coming to campus.
She will live at the Stevenson Companion Animal Life-Care Center on campus, where she will be able to interact with the Aggie community and receive the care she needs, a statement said.
The 12-member selection committee will immediately begin a nationwide search for her successor.
The first Reveille, a mixed breed rescued from the roadside in the early 1930s, earned her name by howling in response to the corps bugler as he played reveille to wake up the cadets.
That dog died in January, 1944 and received a formal military funeral on Kyle Field's 50-yard line.
