Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson — the all-time NCAA leader in all-purpose yards — pleaded guilty to scheming with his girlfriend to steal thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise from a Macy's store, the Tulsa World reported Thursday.
According to the paper, Johnson and Chamon Jones, both 21, pleaded guilty to felony embezzlement and received one-year deferred jail sentences. A judge ruled the charge would be dismissed, with no conviction, if the pair stays out of trouble during a one-year probation term.
They were also ordered to serve 80 hours of community service and each was ordered to pay $750 in court costs and contributions to a victims fund, the World reported.
Jones, a Macy's employee at the time of their arrests on Aug. 26, was said to have let Johnson walk out of the store with more than $2,600 worth of merchandise while only paying $13.
The merchandise was returned to the store, so the defendants were not required to pay restitution, according to the report.
Johnson, a senior, was suspended indefinitely after his arrest by Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship. Blankenship said Wednesday, following the guilty pleas, that he does not foresee Johnson being reinstated this season.
The wide receiver and return specialist broke the record for career all-purpose yardage last December against Hawaii and also holds the NCAA record for career kick return yards.
Johnson has amassed 7,796 all-purpose yards, including 3,417 kick return yards, and has exceeded 200 all-purpose yards in a game 19 times in his career.
