The Citadel suspends QB Allen for season opener

(STATS) - The Citadel starting quarterback Dominique Allen has been suspended for the team's season opener for an unspecified violation of team rules, first-year coach Brent Thompson said Wednesday.

The Bulldogs, who won a share of the Southern Conference title last year, open the season on Sept. 1 at Mercer. But Allen also will miss about four weeks of preseason camp after suffering a finger injury - unrelated to his suspension. Practices begin Thursday.

"We have high expectations for all members of our team and there are consequences when those expectations are not met," Thompson said in a statement. "I am disappointed in Dominique's choices and the impact they are having on our team, but he has taken responsibility for his actions and we will move forward. Earlier this week, in a separate and unrelated occurrence, Dominique injured a finger on his throwing hand and will not be available to practice as we open camp tomorrow. He is expected to miss approximately four weeks, but will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis."

Allen, a 6-foot-1, 214-pound junior from Richmond Hill, Georgia, helped The Citadel to a 9-4 record (6-1 SoCon) and No. 13 final ranking in the STATS FCS Top 25. He rushed for a team-high 958 yards with 13 touchdowns and passed for 871 yards and four TDs with six interceptions.
