Texas starts freshman Buechele at QB

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas started freshman Shane Buechele was the starting quarterback against No. 10 Notre Dame on Sunday night instead of senior Tyrone Swoopes.

Buechele is the first freshman quarterback to start a Longhorns season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944.

Buechele enrolled in school in January and was able to immediately start competing for the job in new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert's offense. The Longhorns went 11-14 previous two seasons but coach Charlie Strong had refused to publicly name his starter until kickoff.

Swoopes started most of the 2014 season and part of 2015 and has a career record of 6-8 as a starter.
