NEW YORK -- Texas A&M makes a big jump in the AP Top 25 after the most impressive performance of the opening weekend of college football. Florida State and Alabama lost some support in the first poll of the regular season after close victories against heavy underdogs.
The Aggies moved up 12 spots to No. 9 in the poll released Tuesday. Texas A&M began the post-Johnny Manziel era with a 52-28 victory at South Carolina. The loss dropped the Gamecocks from eighth to No. 21.
The top four in the rankings are unchanged: Florida State, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma. Auburn moved up one spot from No. 6 to round out the top five.
Florida State went from 57 first-place votes to 46 after pulling out a 37-31 victory against Oklahoma State.
Alabama dropped 44 points in the media-panel voting after beating West Virginia. The Tide has one first-place vote. Oregon has five and Oklahoma two. No. 6 Georgia has two and No. 12 LSU one.
Georgia saw a big jump too, going from No. 12 to No. 6 after upending Clemson, which fell from No. 16 to No. 23 with the loss. Michigan State moved up one spot to No. 7 after whipping Jacksonville State. Ohio State fell from No. 5 to No. 8 after struggling to get past Navy. Baylor stayed put at No. 10, right behind Texas A&M.
Three Pac-12 teams registered in the 11-15 range, with UCLA at No. 11, Stanford at No. 13 and USC at No. 14. The SEC took the other two spots in that section with LSU at No. 12 and Ole Miss at No. 15.
Nos. 16-20 were Notre Dame, Arizona State, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Kansas State.
The only new entrant was Louisville, which moved up to No. 25 after whipping Miami (FL) in the teams' ACC opener.
