Tennessee using sleep coach to help players during practice

College football teams do whatever it takes to get the best out of their players. From practice schedules to the right diet, everything the players do is measured to make sure the team can get the top performance every weekend. Now, the Tennessee Volunteers are taking it a step further and putting focus on what happens in the bedroom … and we’re talking about sleep.

The program has brought in sleep coaches to measure how the players are sleeping, how long they are sleeping and how long it takes them to fall asleep:

Another set of tools used as a part of the program are special glasses that players wear in the hour before sleep that block out the blue light emitted by smartphones, laptops and TV screens that can have an effect on how quickly a person falls asleep.


All of the data comes to a smartphone app that is part of the program. Every player having access to his own data has turned the players into competitors in sleep, as well as football. The app also tells them not only what their physical recovery was, but also their mental recovery.
