TCU, West Virginia Big 12 contenders in 3rd year
A few things to watch during Week 10 in the Big 12 Conference:
GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 10 TCU at No. 20 West Virginia. Three years ago, the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers were on their way to defending titles in different conferences. They then joined the Big 12 together, and both went 11-14 overall (6-12 in league play) the past two years. Now on the first Saturday of November in Year 3, former Mountain West champ TCU (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) and past Big East champ WVU (6-2, 4-1) are Big 12 contenders. And each still plays league-leading Kansas State at home. The Frogs are coming off a record 82 points against Texas Tech, and lead the Big 12 with 50.4 points a game. WVU's four-game winning streak includes a 41-27 win in its last home game against then-No. 4 Baylor, which before that averaged nearly 53 points a game. WVU's Clint Trickett is the league's top passer with 345 yards per game, and TCU's Trevone Boykin is second at 329 yards a game with a team-record seven TD passes in three quarters last week.
BEST MATCHUP: Kansas State receiver Tyler Lockett and Oklahoma State's Tyreek Hill, speedy all-purpose threats on opposite sides Saturday. Hill leads the Big 12 with 150.2 all-purpose yards per game, and Lockett is fourth with 132 yards per game. Hill has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season. Lockett has 12 career 100-yard receiving games, including eight catches for 103 yards last week against Texas, and averages 23.6 yards on 10 punt returns.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Big 12 has five teams in the initial College Football Playoff rankings this week, led by No. 7 TCU, six spots ahead of Baylor despite that wild 61-58 loss at Waco on Oct. 11. Kansas State is ninth, two spots ahead of its AP ranking, while Oklahoma is 18th and West Virginia 20th. ... Kansas LB Ben Heeney leads the Big 12 with 12 tackles per game, with at least 10 in the first half in each of the last two games. ... Ryan Bustin's 47 career field goals at Texas Tech are one short of Alex Trlica's school record.
LONG SHOT: Iowa State at home against No. 19 Oklahoma. The Sooners (5-2, 3-2), more than a two-touchdown road favorite, have won the last 15 games in the series that they have dominated 71-5-2. Oklahoma, coming off a loss to K-State, hasn't dropped consecutive regular-season games since the start of the 2000 season, winning its last 31 games after a loss. In that same span, Iowa State (2-5, 0-4) has wins over every current Big 12 team - except Oklahoma.
IMPACT PLAYER: Texas senior linebackers Jordan Hicks and Steve Edmond. Hicks and Edmond have combined for 185 tackles, 19 for losses with five sacks.
