Start of Illinois-South Florida game delayed by lightning

Published Sep. 15, 2017 7:53 p.m. ET

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) No. 22 South Florida and Illinois have started play following a 37-minute weather delay.

Lightning in vicinity of Raymond James Stadium during pregame warmups forced the delay Friday night. The teams were allowed to return to the field 25 minutes after the scheduled 7 p.m. start time.

USF (2-0) is playing for the first time since its American Athletic Conference opener at Connecticut was postponed due to Hurricane Irma. Illinois (2-0) is trying to begin a season with three straight victories for the first time since 2011.
