One day after receiving a scholarship offer from the South Carolina Gamecocks, tight end prospect Will Register gave his pledge to the team giving them first commitment of their 2017 recruiting class.

Register is listed at six-foot-four, 240-pounds and also had an offer from in-state rival Clemson, according to 247 Sports.

The newest member to South Carolina's class spoke with Palmetto Sports following his commitment to his childhood favorite team.

"I really was keeping quiet about it," Register said. "I've grown up a Gamecock. I've grown up here all around Gamecock football so I'm very happy with my decision and I feel like it's definitely the right one for me. I've always wanted to be a gamecock football player and now I've got an opportunity I'm definitely excited."

The tight end prospect shed some light on his anticipated role with the team: "From it sounds like they will use me both as an in line blocking tight end and also split me out and see if I can run some routes and help them with the receiving game as well."

As well as gave some thoughts on his future head coach: "Coach Spurrier is a great coach and I'm really looking forward to being coached under him," Register said. "I believe he has a great staff around him, too. If Coach Spurrier at some point decides he needs to resign from South Carolina, I really believe the program itself will be able to keep moving forward. But Coach Spurrier is a big part of it and I really want to play under him."

But will Spurrier be around to coach the tight end two seasons from now? Spurrier recently turned 70 in April and talk of his eventual retirement have begun. If the Gamecocks win 11 games again, as they had three seasons in a row until 2014, any talk of retirement is sure to die down as quickly as it appeared late last season.
