Source: Notre Dame expected to hire Boise State's Sanford as new OC

Mike Sanford is expected to become the new offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, a source told FOX Sports. The official hire could take a few days because Notre Dame is known to have one of college athletics' more stringent HR processes in vetting new hires.

The 32-year-old Sanford sparked Boise State to the No. 9 scoring offense in college football last season. The Broncos, 12-2, displayed one of the most balanced offenses in the nation. They ranked No. 29 in rushing, No. 23 in passing and were No. 17 in Red Zone offense in the first season under head coach Bryan Harsin.

Sanford will inherit a Fighting Irish offense with almost everyone back from an 8-5 squad that ranked No. 32 in total offense. ND, though, did struggle to run the ball, ranking No. 70 in yards per carry (4.28) and averaging just 3.91 yards per carry in its 11 games against teams from Power 5 conferences.

Sanford, the son of Indiana State head coach Mike Sanford, was a QB at Boise State and has previously coached at UNLV, Stanford, Yale and Western Kentucky.
