S. Illinois 35, Indiana St. 28

Jewel Hampton scored his second touchdown with 6:13 left, lifting Southern Illinois to a 35-28 victory over Indiana State on Saturday.

Hampton rushed 35 times for a career-high 178 yards for the Salukis (4-7, 2-6 Missouri Valley). Kory Faulkner also ran for two Southern Illinois scores.

Donald Spencer caught two touchdown passes from Ronnie Fouch for the Sycamores (6-5, 4-4), who trailed 21-0 at halftime but tied the game in the third quarter.

Mike McElroy returned an interception 35 yards for a Southern Illinois touchdown early in the fourth quarter before Ben Obaseki's 2-yard run tied it for the Sycamores ahead of Hampton's second TD run.

McElroy then intercepted Fouch at the Southern Illinois 1-yard line with 51 seconds left to preserve the win.

Indiana State's Shakir Bell, the nation's leading rusher, finished with 137 yards on 24 carries.
