S Dakota St mascot gets Jack-rabbit name

South Dakota State didn't have to burrow too far to settle on a nickname for its Jackrabbit mascot.

It will be named Jack.

The university celebrated the mascot's 105th birthday Friday and announced the winner of a contest to name it. More than 880 people participated in the online contest and there were six finalists. Jack received 35 percent of the 3,956 votes cast online.

The school says the first recorded mention of the rabbit mascot came in a 1905 newspaper article about a football game between South Dakota State and Minnesota.
