PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) There's not much that Leonte Carroo does on the football field that surprises him.
However, there is one statistic that even shocks the Rutgers' senior wide receiver.
His first catch every season has gone for a touchdown, and his first three this season. The latest was a 55-yard touchdown reception against Norfolk State, igniting a phenomenal game even though he sat out the first half because of a curfew violation.
''That's pretty weird the last three years every single time my first catch has been a touchdown,'' Carroo said.
Carroo didn't slow down after that first catch. He had two more Saturday, and broke Rutgers' all-time touchdown receptions record with 22 touchdown catches. Brandon Coleman and Tim Brown had shared the record at 20.
As he embarks on a senior season he could have forgone for the NFL draft, Carroo is solidifying himself as one of the best receivers in school history. He has 86 career catches for 1,693 yards, a 19.7 yard average, and draws comparisons to Mohamed Sanu and Kenny Britt.
''Those guys are in the NFL and having a lot of success right now, so they had a lot of Rutgers success and they're continuing to build on their success and I'm hoping to do the same thing,'' Carroo said. ''I'm hoping that people just don't hear about Leonte Carroo now.''
He also wants to be known as one of the best wide receivers in the Big Ten and beyond.
''I want to be the best receiver in the country, so with that I know I have to put in work,'' he said.
While he may not get three more touchdowns this weekend against Washington State, he'll be sure to get in the end zone a few more times this season. Carroo averages a touchdown for every 3.9 receptions.
''I actually make a joke with guys like (left tackle Keith) Lumpkin and I tell them when I'm in it's going to be short drives' because I know linemen tend to get tired and they don't want to be in there 15 plus snaps,'' he said.
