Report: Wannstedt out at Pitt

Pitt has fired head coach Dave Wannstedt, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on its Web site Tuesday.
The paper reported that defensive line coach Greg Gattuso said assistant coaches at Pitt were informed of the decision Tuesday afternoon, and that it was not known who would serve as head coach for the Panthers when they play in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 8.
Pitt finished the regular season 7-5, but losses to UConn on Nov. 11 and West Virginia on Nov. 26 cost the Panthers the chance to win the Big East championship outright and advance to play in a more-lucrative BCS bowl. The 35-10 loss to West Virginia was particularly damaging to Wannstedt, a source told the Post-Gazette.
Pitt has failed to win an outright Big East title or go to a BCS bowl in six seasons under Wannstedt.
