A gun store in Kingston, Tenn., that had planned to hold an event where Tennessee football fans could shoot at a bobblehead of former Vols coach Lane Kiffin had a change of heart Friday.
Instead Frontier Firearms plans to adopt out the bobbleheads of Kiffin and his father, USC defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, The Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
"For a $5 donation, bobblehead lovers may take home their very own Monte or Lane Kiffin bobblehead doll to love and nurture as they see fit," shop owner Brant Williams said.
"While we believe our choice of targets has no bearing on evil and would be unrelated to past, present, or future criminal acts, we concede that shooting bobbleheads is in poor taste -- especially in light of the tragic shooting in Tucson.
"Sometimes what sounds like fun or a good idea just isn't and as we have said all along, no one wishes harm to Coach Kiffin."
The event, planned for Saturday, is timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Kiffin's departure from Rocky Top to become head coach at USC.
Kiffin went 7-6 in his one season at Tennessee, losing in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to Virginia Tech. This season he was 8-5 with the Trojans, but the school was ineligible to play in a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions.
Tennessee replaced Kiffin with Derek Dooley, who went 6-7 in his first season in Knoxville, including a 30-27 loss to North Carolina in the Music City Bowl.
