Penn State will establish a national Center for the Protection of Children to conduct research and provide treatment to victims of sexual abuse across the country.

University President Rodney Erickson said in an interview with USA Today on Tuesday that the center will feature experts from the university's 24 campuses and will be located at Hershey Medical Center's Children's Hospital.

According to Erickson, the center will be initially funded with $2 million in college football bowl proceeds that the university is slated to receive from the Big Ten Conference.

"We are going to learn from this tragedy," Erickson told the newspaper. "We are not going to run away from the issue of child abuse."

Erickson also promised that students, taxpayers and university donors would not bear any responsibility for the increasing legal fees, potential settlements and other costs associated with the ongoing abuse investigation against former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Erickson said whatever expenses the university's insurance policy does not cover will be raised privately.
