The city of Charlotte, N.C., could jump into the bidding mix to host an upcoming college football national championship game, The Charlotte Observer reported.

The College Football Playoff is expected to determine sites for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 games this fall, and any city with the capabilities to host the event can submit a bid. The 2016 event will be held in Glendale, Ariz., with the 2017 title game being staged in Tampa, Fla.

The Charlotte Sports Foundation is thinking about bidding for a game that would be played at Bank of America Stadium, where the NFL's Carolina Panthers play.

"It's not something we have decided on yet," Charlotte Sports Foundation executive director Will Webb said, according to the Observer. "But we're looking at it and analyzing it. We haven't presented it to our board or gotten approval yet."

Charlotte has proven capable of hosting large-scale events in the past. It most recently hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention, has hosted a college football bowl game every year since 2002 and hosted the 1994 men's Final Four and 1996 women's Final Four.
