Report: And then there were 3 as Strong interviews Cal OC

Published Dec. 10, 2015 2:59 p.m. ET

After interviewing two co-offensive coordinators who don't call plays for their respective teams, Texas coach Charlie Strong turned his attention Thursday to Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.

Orangebloods and Horns Digest both reported Franklin becoming the third candidate in Strong's search for a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Unlike TCU's Sonny Cumbie, who turned down a reportedly $1 million per year offer, and Tulsa's Sterlin Gilbert, who is believed not to have received an offer yet, Franklin calls plays for the Golden Bears.

Cal's offense finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation in total offense and No. 5 in passing offense behind quarterback Jared Goff, who when last seen in Austin in September couldn't believe Texas missed an extra point that would have tied the game in the final minute to cap a furious Longhorns rally. Cal won, 45-44.

Franklin, who was born in Kentucky and attended Murray State, has no ties to the state of Texas, unlike Cumbie and Gilbert. Franklin in his his third season as Cal's offensive coordinator. He spent the three previous seasons as Louisiana Tech's offensive coordinator.
