Ref's miscue forces Indiana to punt on 3rd down

There were so many penalties in Saturday's game at Indiana, even the officials got confused.

Late in the fourth quarter, Indiana quarterback Dusty Kiel was called for intentional grounding on a first-down play from the South Carolina State 31.

The penalty cost the Hoosiers 12 yards and loss of a down. But instead of changing the marker to second down, the sideline showed the Hoosiers having third down. The officials never corrected the error.

Kiel then threw an incomplete pass, which should have brought up third down. Instead, with the marker showing fourth down, first-year Indiana coach Kevin Wilson sent his punt team onto the field and the Hoosiers kicked the ball away.

The bungled call did not change the outcome. Indiana held on for a 38-21 victory.

The two teams combined for 30 penalties Saturday.
